If I take one more step…

Hi!! My name is Thomas Pyper and I am the RA on ILLC 4. I am also on the marketing team for, and am really excited for AMPED this year.
I have had a very exciting first semester as an RA. It has been a lot of fun getting to know new people and developing my leadership skills, and it has also been a learning experience. In high school, I was shy, quiet and un-involved with the school community. When I came to Ryerson I wanted to change this. I tried to get involved with the community both within Ryerson and residence. This was challenging at the beginning, as I was trying to overcome my shyness.
One of the things that I went to was the AMPED Conference. AMPED helped me to develop my skills as a leader, and also helped influence my decision to apply to be a RA, and I am very glad I did. This job has helped me to develop my leadership skills even further, help overcome my shyness, and also meet some amazing people.
Often times the first step in doing something new can be challenging, and sometimes scary, but it can also lead to amazing experiences. In my experience, I had to push my-self to make the first steps, but once I did, it became easier to get involved and do things like attending this conference.
Just like Frodo says in the Lord of the Rings, “It’s a dangerous business, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” Frodo says this in the movie to encourage Sam to leave their home (the Shire). They didn’t know it yet, but they were embarking on an adventure of a lifetime.
AMPED is a perfect opportunity to take the first steps, or continue to develop you skills as a leader. The conference is being held January 18-19th 2013 and takes place in residence. I hope to see you there!
